City Awarded Texas Environmental Leadership Award

New Braunfels, TX – The City of New Braunfels’ Solid Waste and Recycling Division was awarded first place in the category of Outstanding Environmental Public Education and Outreach Program in the 2018 Texas Environmental Leadership Awards (TELA).  The State of Texas Alliance for Recycling (STAR) presented and recognized the City and the other award winners during a special ceremony and dinner at the 2018 Texas Recycling Summit on Tuesday, October 30th in Galveston, Texas.

The nine awards given through TELA program by STAR recognize stewards of environmental change in Texas from individuals, communities, organizations, and businesses.  “These awards are a great way for us to work together, influence, and challenge one another to make an impact in recycling, composting, sustainable materials management, public education and outreach, special event recycling, and more,” STAR states on their website.

The program that won the award is the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Education Program for all New Braunfels Independent School District (NBISD) 6th graders that the City hosts annually in collaboration with NBISD.  “This is an admirable program and a tremendous collaborative effort by two local entities,” says Mike Mundell, Solid Waste Manager.  “The curriculum teaches and engages more than 650 students to be environmentally cognizant and responsible waste generators.  It even has an active component where students physically practice recycling through the guise of fun and games. Many congratulations to the City’s Recycling Coordinator Catelyn Scholwinski and the District for continuing to conduct this successful program.”

STAR is a 501c(3) recycling organization whose mission is to advance recycling through partnerships, education, and advocacy in Texas.  For more information on STAR, visit www.recyclingstar.org.
