The Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (AAMPO) invites people from Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe and Kendall Counties to attend one of four public meetings planned to discuss regional transportation planning. The Comal County meeting will be held Monday, October 30 at the New Braunfels Civic Convention Center. The Open House begins at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting runs from 6:00 to 8:00.
According to the U.S. Census, Comal, Guadalupe, and Kendall Counties are three of the fastest growing counties in the United States. Bexar County alone will be adding 1.1 million people by 2045 (see table below). This will very likely double the vehicle miles traveled in the region which can impact commute times, congestion, the environment, and the overall quality of life of residents in the region.
To plan for this growth, the AAMPO will be updating their short and long-range plans and possibly completing a transportation conformity document, a document that outlines the impacts of our transportation projects on air quality, by June 2018. The public meetings will discuss 1) the Mobility 2045: Metropolitan Transportation Plan update process, as well as 2) the air quality status of the region.
Metropolitan Planning Organizations, like the AAMPO, are required by Federal law to update their long-range Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) at least every five years. This document includes strategies, actions and projects that will lead to “an integrated multimodal transportation system to facilitate the safe and efficient movement of people and goods.” Federal funds cannot be used for transportation projects unless they are included in an adopted long-range plan. The MTP must also be financially constrained by the reasonably expected level of transportation funding.
All meetings will be similar in format and content and everyone is welcome to participate. The meetings are BYOD (bring your own device) as participants will be walked through an interactive online activity. The AAMPO will have iPads available for those who need them. Community members can also participate online starting October 25, 2017 through November 3, 2017 at www.alamoareampo.org/mobility2045.
